Tongues is a gift from the Holy Spirit, it is the spirit of power that was promised by Jesus. "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Spirit is come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth" ( Acts 1:8) that was given to the church when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the believers on the day of Pentecost in Acts Chapter 2. Speaking in tongues is one of the evidence that a believer has received the gift of the holy spirit and has many spiritual benefits that we will dive into and why every believer should make praying in tongues their prayer language.
Praying in tongues is firmly rooted in the Bible, particularly in the New Testament. The Apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 14:2, states, "For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit." This verse emphasizes the direct communication between the believer and God that occurs during praying in tongues. When a believer pray in tongues it means that he/she is praying the will of God, we allow the holy Spirit to intercede for us and through us. (Rom. 8:26)
1. Personal Edification:
1 Corinthians 14:4 highlights an important benefit of praying in tongues, stating, "Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves." This means that when we pray in tongues, our spirits are strengthened and refreshed, providing a source of spiritual renewal and empowerment. Praying in tongues also causes the believer too become fortified in that it builds strength and endurance and causes them to grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ.
2. Spiritual Warfare:
Engaging in Spiritual warfare through praying in tongues is another benefit. Praying in tongues equips and strengthens the believer's ability to stand against spiritual attacks. Ephesians 6:18 encourages us to "pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests." Speaking in tongues enables us to pray beyond our limited understanding, allowing the Holy Spirit to intercede for us in battles we may not even comprehend. For we do not know what we should pray but the Holy Spirit makes intercession for us with groanings that cannot be uttered. Romans 8:26
3. Revelation and Insight
When we Pray in tongues this leads to increased divine revelation and insight. Believers receive spiritual downloads guidance and wisdom when they pray in their heavenly language. 1 Corinthians 14:2 states that one who speaks in a tongue speaks mysteries by the Spirit, which can include divine secrets and understanding of mysteries.
4. Divine Wisdom:
1 Corinthians 2:10-11 explains that the Holy Spirit knows the deep things of God, and when we pray in tongues, we access different realms and tap into this divine wisdom. Through tongues, believers can access insights and revelations that transcend human knowledge, enriching their spiritual understanding.
5. Builds Faith:
Jude 1:20 encourages believers to "build themselves up in their most holy faith" through praying in the Holy Spirit. Praying in tongues strengthens our faith, helping us trust God's plan even when circumstances seem unclear or challenging.
6. Refreshment and Rest
Isaiah 28:11-12 speaks of God bringing rest and refreshing through stammering lips and another tongue. This is often interpreted to mean that praying in tongues can bring spiritual and emotional rest and refreshment to the believer, alleviating stress, worry and anxieties and renewing strength.
Praying in tongues has many spiritual benefits, and is a biblical practice that offers a direct line of communication with God, including personal edification, Spiritual empowerment, Divine wisdom, an enhanced prayer life, greater intimacy with God, increased revelation, effective spiritual warfare, strengthened faith, and spiritual refreshment. These benefits causes us to have a deeper, more robust Christian walk and a closer connection with the Holy Spirit. Praying in tongues deepens the believer's faith, increases spiritual discernment and draws you closer to the Holy Spirit.
